Study Report on the Distance Seminars for Selfgrowth

Results from a Questionnaire Study

Results of the questionnaires accompanying the courses

The following results are based on 518 questionaires out of the 13 seminars of the last four years.

The ones who did it

4 out of 5 participants are women between 40 and 60 years old, basically my generation that has been involved in personal growth work for many years. Every second has been involved for more than eight years in personal growth work and/or spiritual practice. So it's no surprise that half of the participants are working in the health or therapeutic sector. Another quarter comes from education.

The minority group of 20% are men. Most of them work in business or administration and are rather new to this type of growth work (less than two years of experience with therapeutic approaches or meditation practice). Compared to the background experience that the women brought to this course, the men have profited as much from this approach.

There were 2 to 3 people in each course who didn't find it worthwhile to participate. They didn't experience the changes they had expected or had specific needs that didn't get addressed

Expectations and how they were met

Independent of the theme, participants profited most within the area of personal development, followed by the issues specific to the theme. In my understanding, this reflects the depth of the work. The shifts are happening on a base level and then radiate out into specific areas.

In many areas the course went beyond the expectations of the participants. This is true in regard to inner stability and peace, shifting the perception from lack to abundance, clarifying one's needs and feelings, improving self love and self appreciation and improving eating habits and physical well being.

Expectations were met in the areas of finding one's balance, happiness and fun in life, shifting addictions and bad habits, opening one's heart to love, deepening the relationship with a partner and understanding one's life purpose.

The expectations were not met in regard to finding a partner as a result of the course on Love. Looking closer, it turned out that the four participants who had given this need a priority among the first three from a list of 10 options, actually did 'walk out' of this course with a newly found love. For the other ones, a new partner was more of a wish while the actual priorities were on personal development.

Specific results of the three courses

Course on Abundance

The first course on Abundance focused on letting go of poverty consciousness and habits of worrying, shifting the attention to the high lights in life. 3 out of 4 let go of old wounds and raised their energy level to explore the new and meet new people. They improved their capacity to enjoy life instead of worrying about it and to appreciate themselves.

About 60% of the participants shifted their attention from crisis and catastrophes to success and happy events. Within this context, they stopped to worry about the future and to think about bad experiences in the past. In conversation with friends, they stopped gossiping about others or focusing on failures and problems. Instead, they spent more time on finding creative solutions, fun and laughter.

Course on Love

The course strengthened the understanding of love as oneness while the misunderstanding of giving oneself up for the other person or worrying about the other diminished. The course also deepened the co-operation between life partners, the love for oneself and the capacity to look at others through loving rather than judging eyes. Needs for safety, fears of dependency and self-judgements diminished accordingly. In cases of a separation from a partner, the number of those who felt they would be able to take the initiative to sort out their lives nearly doubled to 40%.

Course on Health

What we understand by health is very subjective. Half of the participants take it as an overall sense of well being. A quarter relates vitality and resilience with it and 1 out of 5 inner peace. This basic understanding did not change during the course. What changed was the number of those who considered themselves being healthy by the end of the course. It nearly tripled from 12% to 30%.

In accordance with this subjective self-evaluation, quite a few had shifted to a diet suiting their specific needs as a result of the course. Those who considered their lifestyle to be healthy or predominantly healthy nearly doubled up to 80%, those who considered their The physical condition as being in a good state nearly doubled up to 55%.

Looking at the bad habits which are a key factor in how healthy we feel and are, nearly in all areas bad habits dropped by 10-20%, be it that people used less alcohol, work, food, coffee or television. The only area that did not change was smoking.

On the other side, people picked up healthier habits and fulfilled their needs for more love, sex and sport, again by 10-20%. They were moving and running more and felt less exhausted or stiff.

In accordance with these results, participants were more able to fulfil their needs and to be in alignment with their chosen life style, be it a steady, reliable base, a base with adventure or an adventurous life.
